Limits

What this doesn’t do.

Published here rather than conceded in a meeting. A measure that won’t state its own limits shouldn’t be trusted with anyone's decisions.

  • It doesn’t predict growth. It measures the commercial conditions that have to be true before a company can grow, and whether they’re improving. That’s upstream of growth, not a forecast of it.
  • It doesn’t predict or improve the odds of funding. No claim connecting a score to a funding outcome will be made until outcome evidence supports one, and there’s none yet.
  • It’s not a credit or risk signal. It must not be used as an input to lending, affordability, pricing or eligibility decisions.
  • The data is self-reported. It’s what the company says about how it sells, stated on every report. Answering generously produces a flattering number and no movement at the rescore, which is the only part anyone cares about.
  • It doesn’t rank companies against each other. A score is a position against a fixed reference, not a league table.
  • It doesn’t claim causation. A company that moved after an intervention moved after an intervention. The report says that and no more.
  • There’s no peer benchmark. The sample isn’t large enough for one to be fair, and a fair comparison group is one business model at one maturity level, which makes the threshold harder to reach rather than easier. See the version history.
  • Nothing unverified is dressed as fact. Every figure on this site that’s not confirmed appears as a marked placeholder.
